Long-Term Care FAQ
What’s the Difference Between Long-Term Care and Nursing Care?
Long-term care is aimed at older adults with chronic conditions or disabilities that worsen over time. If recovery isn’t likely, the focus is instead on providing the best quality of life.
In contrast, nursing care is focused on helping sick or injured individuals recover and can be for a short or long period, depending on their needs.
Long-term care typically takes a more holistic approach and includes services that go beyond physical needs. For example, long-term care at Concordia includes a focus on wellness programs, spiritual connections and social activities.
Who Is Concordia’s Care Staff for Long-Term Care Residents?
Our care team is comprised of a range of medical and support professionals, including:
- Certified physicians
- Registered nurses
- Certified nursing assistants (CNAs)
- Medication aides
- Home aides
- Physical therapists
- Dietitians
- Third-party specialists
Does Medicare Cover Long-Term Care in Oklahoma City?
Medicare typically doesn’t cover costs for long-term care, except for medically-related needs such as skilled nursing care, doctor’s appointments and medications. All other costs, such as room and board, assistance with daily activities and other amenities, won’t be covered by Medicare.
How Can I Better Plan the Transition to Long-Term Care?
To make the transition to long-term care as seamless as possible, discuss these items with healthcare providers at your chosen senior care community in Oklahoma City:
- What are your loved one’s dietary likes and dislikes?
- How mobile is he/she?
- How much can he/she manage personal care and hygiene?
- What role does religion play in his/her life?
- What are his/her routines and habits, as well as hobbies?
- Is he/she experiencing cognitive decline?
- Does he/she fear new surroundings?
- Does he/she socialize easily?
- By asking these questions in advance, your family can access the best possible care.
How Can I Have More Meaningful Visits with My Loved One in Long-Term Care?
Visitors are very important to residents and a well-planned visit can be rewarding for both of you. Our staff can help you with the best times to plan a visit. If you are bringing children, coach them on what to expect and plan an activity such as working on a photo album, writing letters, playing a game, or eating a meal together. If your loved one is healthy enough, consider planning an activity outside the center as well.
