Gift Instruments

Depending on your charitable intent and stewardship goals, you may choose to give through formal gift instruments. These may include bequests, trusts or other planned giving tools. You can also include a Christian Preamble in your will or living trust to express your faith and values.

Gift Annuity

A charitable gift annuity is a formal agreement between a donor and a trusted foundation. The donor transfers assets, such as cash or publicly traded securities, and in return, the foundation provides fixed payments for the lifetime of one or two individuals.

A gift annuity may be established with as little as $5,000. Some donors choose to contribute low-yield stock, as gift annuities may offer a more favorable return. The payment amount is determined at the time the gift is made and is based on the annuitant’s age and the value of the contribution.

After the annuitant or annuitants pass away, the remaining funds are directed to the donor’s chosen charitable organization, such as Concordia Life Plan Community.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust allows you to receive income now while supporting a charitable mission in the future. When the trust ends, the remaining assets are donated to the ministry or charity of your choice.

This type of trust can be funded with cash, publicly traded securities or real estate. The best trust structure for you will depend on your assets and long-term stewardship goals.

There are two common types of “straight-pay” charitable remainder trusts:

  • Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT): Provides an annual payment based on a fixed percentage of the trust’s value, which is recalculated each year. Payout rates typically range from 5 to 6.5 percent. The trust’s assets are reinvested to support future payments.
  • Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT): Pays a fixed annual amount based on the value of the assets at the time the trust is created. The payment remains constant for the life of the trust.

Establishing a charitable remainder trust can be complicated. For more information, consult your gift planning counselor or financial advisor.

Endowment Fund

An endowment fund is a gifting arrangement between you and a trusted foundation. Through this agreement, you designate a specific charity or ministry to receive support from your gift over time.

The amount and timing of the distributions can be tailored to match your charitable goals. The foundation you select manages the fund, invests the assets and distributes income to the chosen organizations.

Endowment funds can be structured in several ways. To explore the best option for your stewardship goals, consult your financial advisor or a gift planning counselor.
