What is Skilled Nursing?

Skilled nursing and rehabilitation care provide housing, medical and rehabilitative therapies to those recovering from illness, injury or surgery in order to successfully transition from an acute care hospital stay to home.

Skilled nursing care may also be referred to as “short-term rehabilitation” and should not be confused with a 24-hour nursing home in Oklahoma City. Rehabilitative therapies provided at short-term rehab centers may include physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy. Care and therapies provided in this setting may be covered by Medicare.

Overall, skilled nursing and rehabilitation care typically mean that residents need medical supervision and support that can no longer be provided safely at home. Our skilled nursing community in Oklahoma City offers professional care, as well as full-range services for patients’ comfort and well-being.

Skilled Nursing Services

Skilled nursing services provide 24-hour licensed care focused on every individual’s specialized needs. This may involve rehabilitation therapy and pain management. A nurse may also perform tasks such as wound care, IV therapy, catheter care, health monitoring and more. Our skilled nursing programs can be tailored to short- and long- term stays, according to the patient’s health situation.

Our team is also highly specialized, with care such as physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy. No matter the treatment needed, our senior rehabilitation in Oklahoma City encourages recovery through expert-backed activities.

In addition to specialized medical services, skilled nursing services also involve assistance with daily living tasks, such as bathing, dressing and eating. At our skilled nursing community in Oklahoma City, each resident receives a care plan for overall health, as well as nutrition, social enrichment, psychological well-being and spiritual preference

Who Benefits from Skilled Nursing?

Skilled nursing is ideal for those who require 24/7 specialized care, whether short- or long-term. There’s no one type of profile or age for a skilled nursing patient. Typically, residents begin skilled nursing care after a recent hospitalization or health event.

Overall, skilled nursing is for residents who need round-the-clock care that’s difficult to get at home, or for families who would like the peace of mind knowing that their loved one is safe. Choosing a Skilled Nursing Community

As you look for a skilled nursing community for a short-term stay or a long-term home, it’s important to find the right fit.

For short-term stays focused on rehab to return a patient home, you’ll want to ask the community about its successful outcomes in treating patients with your or your family member’s illness, injury or disease. You should also learn about the team’s knowledge about post-hospital care to avoid future hospitalizations.

For long-term stays, you should find out about the nursing team’s expertise and compassionate approach. The best way to do this is to tour the center and get a feel for the cleanliness, friendliness of staff and amenities that are important to you. You might even ask to sample food and visit with patients similar to you or your loved one.

At our skilled nursing community in Oklahoma City, we advocate for our patient’s holistic health, which starts with expert care but also includes nutrition, social enrichment, psychological well-being and spiritual preference. FAQs about Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation

What’s the difference between skilled nursing and assisted living?

A skilled nursing facility is often confused with assisted living, but these programs offer distinct types of care. Unlike skilled nursing, assisted living is focused on getting assistance with daily tasks, such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting and staying mobile. This type of care is often long-term, whereas skilled nursing care is short-term, or until the patient has healed from their injury.

What are the different levels of nursing care available?

Every patient will receive a customized care plan, according to their medical needs. This may involve a range of therapies or rehabilitation programs. Some typical tasks include pain management, wound care, IV therapy, catheter care, physical therapy, health monitoring and more. Skilled nursing may also be a part of home care, long-term care or hospice care. Home care is usually performed by a licensed nurse or physical therapist, but may not include other services such as assistance with daily tasks. Long-term care is designed for adults with complex, lifelong medical needs. In long-term care, skilled nursing is combined with other programs, including assistance with daily tasks.

What should I look for when selecting a hospice care provider?

Hospice providers should ensure that your loved one spends his or her final days in comfort. Ask the agency about staff knowledge. Do they have volunteers and counselors trained for your specific needs? Are they focused on meeting your loved one’s and family’s wishes? Will they provide support for mind, body and spirit? Do they have testimonials from satisfied families? Can you speak to them? Are they CHAP-accredited? Be sure to ask as many questions as you need to feel confident in their services.
